This year, Suțu Palace (Bucharest Municipal Museum) dedicates several events to the city of Bucharest, including a gathering with leading local writers, who will read from their works and talk about the city.

The event, part of the Bucharest Days, will take place on September 20, at 6 p.m., at Suțu Palace (MMB), 2 IC Brătianu Blvd., Bucharest.

Bucharest’s literature — beloved and inexhaustible — reaches the public through an evening of readings and dialogue.

Participants: Doina Ruști, Dinu Flămând, Adrian Majuru, Roxana Dumitrache, Andrei Novac, Ana Iorga, Cătălin D. Constantin, Iren Mate, Péter Demény, Dan Pleșa, Petre Nechita.

Canonical works, unpublished pages, writers from all generations, and author readings.

The evening will be moderated by Raoul Alexis Ipate, actor at the Elisabeta Theater, who will also perform a Caragiale moment.

The event is organized in partnership with the group and magazine Ficțiunea.

Doina RUȘTI

Novelist, author of The Ghost in the Mill (2008) and Lizoanca at the Age of Eleven (2009), she is best known for her Phanariot Trilogy (Homeric, 2019; The Book of Perilous Dishes, 2017; The Phanariot Manuscript, 2015). Recent novels include Zavaidoc in the Year of Love (2024), and over 300 short stories. Her most recent novels are Ferenike and The Wild Girl (2025). About 40 of her works have been translated into 17 languages. She is a full professor specializing in the history of culture and universal civilization in film. Dinu FLĂMÂND

Renowned poet, translator, journalist at Radio France, and diplomat, he is the author of an impressive number of books translated into many languages. Biopoeme is his anthology volume, gathering the most important part of his work (1970–2010). The volume, prefaced by Eugen Negrici, was published in the prestigious 101 Poems series of the Romanian Academy (2010).

Adrian MAJURU

Historian, anthropologist, and journalist, Adrian Majuru is known for a series of books and studies on old Bucharest: Albanian Bucharest (2002), Bucharest of the Suburbs, or the Periphery as a Way of Life (2003), Underground Bucharest. Begging, Delinquency, Vagrancy (2005), Childhood in Romania, 1850–1950 (2006), Bucharest. The Story of a Human Geography (2007), How Romanians Used to Have Fun (2011), among others. He is also a novelist. His most recent book is the novel The Thief of the Court of Miracles (2023), awarded the Ficțiunea Prize for Best Character.

Roxana DUMITRACHE

PhD in Political Science (University of Bucharest, 1987), graduate of the London School of Economics and of the Faculty of Political Science (SNSPA, Bucharest). She has coordinated field research on gender dimensions in religious divides and on how social segregation is reflected in the architecture of cities in Albania and Kosovo. She writes regularly on gender equality, discrimination, education, and violence against women. Her prose debut was in 2019 with Papa Nicolau and Other Very, Very Short Stories, winner of the Polirom Debut Prize. She publishes short fiction and academic studies, collaborating with specialized journals. She is currently working on a novel.

Andrei NOVAC

Born July 1, 1983, in Târgu-Jiu. With studies in history and a PhD in philology (West University of Timișoara), Andrei is a university lecturer and Director of the National Book Center of the Romanian Cultural Institute. A poet and member of the Writers’ Union, he has published eight poetry volumes and the monograph Valentin Tașcu, the Solitary of the ’70 Generation. His The Rule of Shyness was nominated for the “Mihai Eminescu” Prize of the Romanian Academy (2018). Awards include the “Mircea Ciobanu” Prize (Writers’ Union), the Convorbiri literare Prize (2019), and the Special Prize of the Writers’ Union, Timișoara Branch (2019).

Ana IORGA

Television presenter (Antena 3 CNN) and linguist at the “Iorgu Iordan — Alexandru Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy. PhD in Philology, University of Bucharest. Besides TV programs, documentaries (Little Greater Romania, Reconciled with Sin), and scholarly studies, she co-authored Tables of YesteryearThe Great Union for Children, and The Book of Courage and Candor.

Cătălin D. CONSTANTIN

Associate professor at the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest, specialized in anthropology and cultural studies. He has published and edited numerous works, including World Heritage Sites in Romania (2013), Cities in Summary. Europe’s Squares and Their Stories (2017), Everyday Life in Old Family Documents (2023), Windows of Bucharest and Their StoriesThe Danube Delta, etc. He regularly contributes to journals such as the Urban Anthropology Review.

Iren MATE

Pen name of Iren Arsene, director of Curtea Veche Publishing. Founder of several prestigious editorial series and editor of major authors (Orhan Pamuk, Mikhail Shishkin, Sally Rooney, among others). She constantly coordinates high-profile cultural projects. She debuted in 2019 with the confessional novel Es mal pas.

Péter DEMÉNY

Poet, prose writer, translator, blogger. PhD in Philology (Hungarian–Romanian section, Babeș–Bolyai University), focusing on the poetry of Zsófia Balla. Former editor at Kriterion Publishing House, then columnist at Krónika daily and Erdélyi Riport weekly, later editor at Látó literary magazine. Currently editor-in-chief of Matca Literară magazine (Bucharest, print and online). Works in Romanian include: The Hypocrites’ Guide (essays, Cartea Românească, 2013), The Splendid Boar (novel, Curtea Veche, 2020), Replayed Whirlwind (novel, Curtea Veche, 2023), Letter from the Savannah (poems, Cartier, 2024).

Dan PLEȘA

Editor, writer, and cultural journalist. A graduate of the Academy of Theatre and Film (screenwriting and film criticism). He has worked in the press and over ten years in the music industry as a producer. Co-founder of Vellant Publishing House. He has published poetry (Marfă, 1996; Marfă Reloaded, 2011, both group anthologies) and short fiction (First TimeHow We Love, and Stories of Love and Helplessness, Vellant, 2019). In 2023 he published his first novel, Black Honey (Vellant), nominated for the Ficțiunea Prize for Best Character and winner of the Short Story Book of the Year Award from Agenția de carte.

Petre NECHITA

Journalist, TV reporter, and prose writer. He debuted with the novel Dad Knows Best! (2021), followed by Damn That Friday! (2022). He also publishes short fiction in journals and anthologies. His most recent story appeared in the collective volume Women, Men, and Their Deeds (2023).

Raoul Alexis IPATE

Actor at the Elisabeta Theater, Bucharest, appreciated and loved especially for his comedy roles. Actively involved in numerous cultural projects, he is a constant presence at Bucharest’s major events.
